I have the version that is pre-flashed with WLED, and it is successfully connected with the app while no LEDs are connected. Once I connect a string of WS2812B LEDs, it disconnects. Similarly, if I power it on with LEDs connected, the app will not connect. Any ideas on what's going wrong?

Same issue with the voltage limiter in the software as well as a low setting.
I've had a similar issue. Never really got it solved properly. It was apparently caused by me initially using a 12v adapter with the WS2812B which requires 5v.
I never got the controller back to original state, even with a fresh adapter and 100% working strip, it just never wanted to connect anymore. I ultimately got a hold of them through the messaging system of Ali Express and they so kindly send me a new one.
The strip itself was cooked as well, so i removed about 1-1.5 meters of it, and so the rest of the strip was fine to be re-used elsewhere.
By any chance you used a higher voltage adapter than the Led strip or the controller likes? The controller should be able to handle 12v, it's the WS2812 that doesn't like it.
very same issue here. the only thing I see if that, i can control how many LEDs the controller switches on. so, if I say the strip has 30, then 30 are lit up - no matter if plugged in an started, or powered up and then plugged the LED strip in. Even flashed to 0.13.3, but it stays the same...
I have had this issue as well but with the HomeKit firmware. I think it has something to do with the voltage/current guard on the controller tripping because the voltage/current input or output is more than the controller is comfortable working with. But I am not sure and have no troubleshooting knowledge behind this or any answers – please don't ask me for help. I'm here for help as well.
