FWIW to the uninitiated, this is my run sheet I pieced together from advice posted here and my trial and error:
Run sheet to update ATH Homebridge SD card and then upgrade Linux^ on a Mac.
1. Note IP address of your ATH Homebridge hub on network, eg., 192.168.xx.xx. Do not include the Homebridge UI port number :8581.
2. Create ATH Homebridge instance backup on your computer (not the ATH Homebridge hub SD card) in Homebridge UI.
3. Download from ATH Google Drive updated athom.orangepi.zip file and homebridge_description.docx instructions from https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1r0weNOWxfvWA2v1Ar-1NtwCHwxUrO7hE?usp=sharing.
4. Download and install Terminus from AppStore.
5. Unzip the athom.orangepi.zip file to get the athom.orangepi.img file.
6. Remove the SD card from the ATH Homebridge hub and place in SD card reader.
7. Download (https://www.balena.io/etcher/) and use the balenaEtcher tool to write the .img file into the SD card. (NB- This will erase the card and install the upgraded version of node.js; Homebridge; Homebridge UI.)
6. Open Terminus and create a host to SSH connect to ATH Homebridge hub via noted IP address (do not include the Homebridge UI port number “:8581”) with username: root | password: orangepi and follow tutorial to upgrade Linux from https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/update-upgrade-debian-10-to-debian-11-bullseye/.
7. Access ATH Homebridge UI in Safari via IP address with port number and restore from backup.
8. Or create new user account to access ATH Homebridge and then reinstall plugins with configuration settings, child bridges.
^When I tried to upgrade Linux first, then etch the new .img file, I erased the upgraded Linux.
Done. Took about 3 hours and felt like I nearly broke things but it's working, all up to date with Debian 11 and newest node.js and newest homebridge and UI. Thanks again.
Tip for anyone else - I used chatgpt to help fill in gaps of my knowledge and to sense check decisions/info coming out of Terminus
I used a tutorial to update from Linux 10 to 11. After this I updated the Node.js Version. The progress it's a little bit long but for me worked perfectly. To connect remotly from my computer to homebridge athom I used the app Termius (with mac), on windows will be Putty. The pass is on docx document and also how to connect. Afetr update to linux 11 I updated the node.js, the command to did this I found on google searching how to update. But you will find easily.

I'll give this a thorough go - I don't mind a little challenge.
